The Move

'Flowers in the Rain' by the Move, written by guitarist and vocalist Roy Wood, was the first record played when Radio 1 launched on 30 September 1967.

Strictly speaking, two pieces were heard before it: George Martin's 'Theme One' and John Dankworth's 'Beefeaters', Tony Blackburn's theme tune.

The Move released 'Flowers in the Rain' on 25 August 1967 as the lead single from their debut album, Move, which followed in March 1968 with the song as its sixth track. The single reached number two on the UK Singles Chart. Its distinctive sound owes much to the instrumental arrangement of oboe, clarinet, cor anglais and French horn, suggested by assistant producer Tony Visconti. The B-side was '(Here We Go Round) the Lemon Tree'. On 30 September 1967 it became the first record played on the newly launched BBC Radio 1. The song was written by Roy Wood, the band's guitarist and vocalist. Forty years on, on 25 September 2007, BBC Radio 4 broadcast The Story of Flowers in the Rain, hosted by Tony Blackburn.
